What would you do if you received a refund from IRS in error? If you are not entitled to the refund you may take the following steps if the check has not been cashed:
- Write "Void" in the endorsement section on the back of the check
- Mail the check immediatley, but not later than 21 days after the receipt to the correct IRS locatation.
- Do not staple, bend or paper clip the check.
- Include a note stating, "Return of erroneous refund check" and give a brief explanation of why the refund check is being returned.
If the check was cashed or the refund was a direct deposit call the IRS at (800) 829-1040 and request information to repay an erroneous refund.
