Protect
Yourself From Identity Theft
Thieves steal your money and possessions. But consider the most
valuable asset that can be stolen -- your own identity. When a thief
has your personal information, it can be easy to use your good name and
make your record go bad.
Be careful with anything that contains your name,
birth date, Social Security number and account numbers -- these are
the
tools of the identity thief. Thieves get your information by
stealing your wallet or purse, taking mail from your mailbox or trash,
intercepting unsecured Internet transactions, posing as someone who needs
the information (like a landlord or employer) or buying
information from
inside sources. There are steps you can take to prevent identity theft.
Keep your Social Security card in a safe
place -- don't carry it with you
unless you need it. Shred any paperwork that has your Social Security
number on it before throwing it away. Keep your information out of
the hands of the enemy.
Anyone can be a victim of
identity theft. It can happen in
minutes, and take years for the fallout to stop.
More and more people from every walk of life are
victimized each day. The results can be overwhelming; a loss of time
and money spent by victims trying to put their lives and
finances back in order.
